The inaugural meeting of the project “C-IZEBs – Cooperative Intelligent Education & Youth” took place yesterday at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth. Electromobility Zero Energy Buildings”, which is implemented through the European Territorial Cooperation Programme, Interreg V-A Greece-Cyprus 2014-2020 in the framework of the fourth call for proposals of strategic character in the specific objective 2.1 “Increasing energy savings in public buildings”. The total budget of the project is 1.763.750,00 €, co-financed by the European Union (E.T.P.A.) and by national resources of Greece and Cyprus and the duration of the project is 24 months. For the implementation of the Act, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth of Cyprus (Main Beneficiary), the University of Cyprus, the Regional Development Fund of Crete and the Municipality of Heraklion cooperate in the form of a Partnership.
The main objective of the project is the creation of Model Intelligent Near Zero Consumption School Buildings that will successfully address the issue of thermal comfort and air quality in classrooms, the enhancement of sustainable mobility and the development of ecological awareness among students, teachers and building users. For the implementation of the project objective, it is expected to carry out actions related to the pilot energy upgrade of two school buildings, the Gymnasium Archbishop Makarios C, in Platy Aglantzia and the Gymnasium & Lyceum of Agios Myronas in Heraklion, through mild passive, active interventions and the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles and bicycles. At the same time, actions related to the participatory education of building users for rational use and management of energy as well as information and dissemination actions of the project results are expected to be carried out.
At the launch of the project, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr. Prodromos Prodromou, who referred to the pilot energy upgrade of the building facilities of the High School Archbishop Makarios C, in Platys Aglantzia, with a total expenditure of more than 500 thousand euros. Referring to the proposed actions, the Minister of Education stressed that they will promote the educational character of schools and will directly enhance the role of environmental education, developing energy and environmental awareness and consciousness in future generations.
This was followed by presentations by the project beneficiaries with thematic sessions covering issues related to pathology and energy use and management in school buildings in Greece and Cyprus. On behalf of the partners, presentations were made by Mr. Andreas Marangos, Head of Technical Services of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Assistant Professor Emilios Michael of the University of Cyprus and Director of the Laboratory of Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings, Dr. Apostolos Michopoulos, Chief Researcher and Deputy Director of the Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings Laboratory, Dr. Chryso Herakleous, Researcher from the Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings Laboratory of the University of Cyprus, Dr. Nikolaos Zographakis, Director of the Regional Development Fund of Crete, Ms. Martha Papadomichelaki, from the Directorate of Planning, Organization & Information Technology Department of European Programmes of the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete and Mr. Georgios Spyridakis from the Technical Department of the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete. The work of the kick-off meeting concluded with the general programming of actions and the definition of the start of technical projects and meetings.
