The C-IZEBs project aims to create intelligent school complexes that will be energy upgraded to meet the need for reduced energy consumption in both countries in the public sector, in order to comply with EU guidelines.

Within the framework of the project, the creation of Model Buildings of Almost Zero Consumption within an eligible area will take place, which will be transformed into “Intelligent” with the use of technological equipment and the Living Labs application, and into “Green”, with the addition of characteristics related to the activity of buildings. Living Labs, ie the live workshops / participatory learning platforms of users of intelligent green buildings, are the modernity of the project and emphasize its ability to utilize existing practices in the field of the program, and to go beyond them. The selected buildings are two school units, in which the project seeks a) to reduce energy consumption, b) to optimize the sense of comfort, c) to enhance sustainable mobility, by creating electric charging stations for vehicles and d) to carry out participatory training to strengthen existing actions (teaching / learning) and to ensure the sustainability of outcomes. Beneficiary administrations face common challenges in their commitments to the EU (meeting the Europe 2020 targets) and the citizens of the eligible area. The pilot actions directly benefit the study area, and their outflows are visible immediately after the upgrade / intervention in the two buildings.

The pilot actions will concern the Energy upgrade of the wing of the Gymnasium of Archbishop Makarios III in Plati Aglantzias in Cyprus and the wing of the Gymnasium & Lyceum of Agios Myronas in Heraklion Crete.

Therefore, in the context of this project, it is foreseen:

  • The realization of workshops for the education of the users of the school units.
  • The creation of a charging station for electric vehicles to support the project of sustainable mobility.
  • The creation of an electronic monitoring and e-learning platform and application for mobile devices that will monitor the energy efficiency of each building for real-time remote control.
  • The provision of an electric bus for the Gymnasium & Lyceum of Agios Myronas and the provision of electric bicycles for the building of the Gymnasium of Archbishop Makarios III.

The promotion of these “green” and “smart” buildings as model examples of energy savings and sustainable mobility.
